This is the best music Elliot Carter ever wrote. It's the American sounds that our Nation wanted during WW2. If it has some hints of Aaron, Roy, and David, well that's not a bad thing. This is enjoyable. Easy to understand.

I actually find this to be quite a phenomenal work! Of course Carter's late style is where I spend most of my listening time, but there are certain elements here that clearly trace to his later style.

Unusual octet in that there's a Double Bass playing in the ensemble which is a real asset.

Charming piece! Definitely needs to be played more often, though pretty tricky, a lot of figurations. It would also work perfectly well at slightly slower tempi

Stunning. One of my favorite choral/orchestral works of Brahms. It's Brahms and unlike him at the same time. Probably one of many great orchestrators for his time. He could color an orchestra so much without over-utilizing too many auxiliary instruments. That takes a mental agility and attention to detail to pull off.

Completely different from the Chopin Mazurkas. These are not from the Romantic period. These seem more mazurka authentic. More folksy. Szymanowski harmonies continue to intrigue me. I enjoy the rhythm and accents.

Sibelius really mastered rhetoric art of the II7-I cadence. It’s such an unusual sound, coming from a double dominant directly to the tonic. It gives the music a wonderful Lydian taste

This piece employs several motifs similar to those found in Wagner's operas, such as: 01:42 - Sigh 02:05 - The Mermaid's Longing, which reappears with strange harmonies at 29:15, symbolizing the pain of the mermaid's unfulfilled longing. 22:01 - Farewell (the musical figure sounds very much like the German "Abschied"), which in the second movement represents the mermaid's resolution to leave the sea. When it reappears at the end of the third movement at 38:53, it signifies her transformation into foam (the rapid arpeggios on the harp probably symbolize the foam), bidding farewell to the world. These motifs frequently recur throughout the three movements, which is very interesting!

No one is mentioning that Ben wrote in *just intonation* - What the negative commenters call “out of tune” is more in-tune than any tempered scale. Unfamiliar intervals are the whole point of exploring xenharmony. Ben was a true genius (who I had the honor to meet twice) and knew more about music than all of us put together. The above says nothing about whether you will or should enjoy his music. That is up to you. But be assured that his compositions are anything but random noise.

Chorus and unison parts of the orchestra outplay the rest. They should be much more piano
